Day 5: Prineville to John Day 117 miles!

I finished the ride but I am too tired to talk about it! Dragged my butt in to the motel after 11.5 hours of riding! The first utterly crappy motel we have been put in; dirty, uncomfortable, and no hot water. Let's hope I feel better by morning when we start another long hard ride-- but only 80 miles...yes, I will grudgingly admit that the scenery was phenomenal and we had a lot of downhill.

  1. I pulled out my Oregon Atlas and find that the route you're now taking is one that Jennifer and her Mom and I took about twelve years ago. I expect you'll be going to Austin Jct, at which you will either follow Route 7 or stay on 26. We took 7 to Baker, then 86 through Middle Bridge, and on to Oxbow dam where we turned around. Mind you, I don't remember much about the trip, but one side trip north out of Richland took us just into Whitman National Forest where I panned for gold while Jennifer and Jane sat in the car talking. After maybe two hours of futile stooping and sloshing, I stood up to a very sore back. I commandeered Jane's cane for the next few days as we returned to Portland, flew to Detroit and installed Jane in an Ann Arbor nursing home. About eight weeks later and perhaps as many visits to the chiropractor I started to feel normal again. Alternatively, you may follow Route 26 out of Austin, in which case you'll be exploring territory I have never visited.

  2. Yeah, Dereka, you kick butt. I thought for sure that you'd ride the bus today....

When the heck do you get a rest?

  3. Congratulations! Did John finish, too? Did many riders opt for a van ride?
